Amara Jivan

āmāra jīvana,  sadā pāpe rata, /  nāhiko punyera leṣa
parere udvega,  diyāchi je koto, / diyāchi jīvere kleśa

I am an impious sinner and have caused others great anxiety and trouble.

nija sukha lāgi’,  pāpe nāhi ḍori, / doyā-hīna swārtha-paro
para-sukhe duḥkhī,  sadā mithya-bhāṣī, / para-duḥkha sukha-karo

I have never hesitated to perform sinful act for my own enjoyment. Devoid of all compassion, concerned only with my own selfish interests, I am remorseful seeing others happy. I am a perpetual liar, and the misery of others is a source of great pleasure for me.

aśeṣa kāmanā,  hṛdi mājhe mora, / krodhī, dambha-parāyana
mada-matta sadā,  viṣaye mohita, / hiḿsā-garva vibhūṣana

The material desires within the core of my heart are unlimited. I am wrathful, devoted to false pride and arrogance, intoxicated by vanity, and bewildered by worldly affairs. Envy and egotism are the ornaments I wear.

nidrālasya hata,  sukārye virata, / akārye udyogī āmi
pratiṣṭha lāgiyā,  śāṭhya-ācaraṇa, / lobha-hata sadā kāmī

Ruined by laziness and sleep, I resist all pious deeds; yet I am very active and enthusiastic to perform wicked acts. For worldly fame and reputation I engage in the practice of deceitfulness. Thus I am destroyed by my own greed and am always lustful.

e heno durjana,  saj-jana-varjita, /  aparādhi nirantara
śubha-kārya-śūnya,  sadānartha-manāḥ, / nānā duḥkhe jara jara

A vile, wicked man such as this, rejected by godly people, is a constant offender. I am such a person, devoid of all good works, forever inclined toward evil, worn out and wasted by various miseries.

bārdhakye ekhona,  upāya-vihīna, / tā’te dīna akiñcana
bhakativinoda,  prabhura caraṇe, / kore duḥkha nivedana

Now in old age, deprived of all means of success, humbled and poor, Bhaktivinoda submits his tale of grief at the feet of the Supreme Lord.

Jiv Jago Jiv Jago

jīv jāgo, jīv jāgo, gauracānda bole
kota nidrā jāo māyā-piśācīra kole

Lord Gauranga is calling, "Wake up, sleeping souls! Wake up, sleeping souls! How long will you sleep in the lap of the witch called Maya?

bhajibo boliyā ese saḿsāra-bhitare
bhuliyā rohile tumi avidyāra bhare

You have forgotten the way of devotional service and are lost in the world of birth and death.

tomāre loite āmi hoinu avatāra
āmi binā bandhu āra ke āche tomāra

I have descended just to save you; other than Myself you have no friend in this world.

enechi auṣadhi māyā nāśibāro lāgi'
hari-nāma mahā-mantra lao tumi māgi'

I have brought the medicine that will wipe out the disease of illusion from which you are suffering. Take this maha-mantra-Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama Rama Rama, Hare Hare."

bhakativinoda prabhu-caraṇe pariyā
sei hari-nāma-mantra loilo māgiyā

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura says: "I fall at the Lord's feet, having taken this mahā-mantra."

karāravindena padāravindaḿ / mukhāravinde viniveśayantam
vaṭasya patrasya puṭeśayānaḿ /bālaḿ mukundaḿ manasā smarāmi

I meditate on that infant Mukunda (Krsna) who is sleeping on the leaf of a banyan tree with his the lotus like foot placed in his lotus like mouth with his lotus like hand.

samhrutya lokān vaṭapatramadhye / śayanamādyanta vihīnarūpam
sarveśvaraḿ sarvahitāvatāraḿ / bālaḿ mukundaḿ manasā smarāmi

I meditate on that infant Mukunda who is sleeping holding all the worlds together on the leaf of a banyan tree in such form, which has no beginning or no end.  He is the incarnation of God for the welfare of all mankind and the Lord of all.

indīvaraśyāmala komalāńgam / indrādidevārcita pādapadmam
santānakalpadrumamāśritānāḿ / bālaḿ mukundaḿ manasā smarāmi

I meditate on Bala Mukunda in my heart, who has a delicate body like a blue lotus and whose foot is worshipped by all the gods and Indra etc. He is the wish-fulfilling tree for those who take refuge in him.

lambālakaḿ lambitahārayaṣṭiḿ / śṛuńgāralīlāńkita danta pańktim
bimbādharaḿ cāruviśālanetraḿ / bālaḿ mukundaḿ manasā smarāmi

I meditate on that Bala Mukunda in my heart, who has hanging curls and hanging necklaces, a beautiful row of teeth which are shown playfully. His lower lip is as red as a Bimba fruit and has beautiful wide eyes.

Parama Karuna Pahu

parama karuṇa, pahū dui jana / nitāi gauracandra
saba avatāra-sāra śiromaṇi/ kevala ānanda-kanda

The two Lords, Nitai-Gauracandra, are very merciful. They are the essence of all incarnations. The specific significance of these incarnations is that They introduced a process of chanting and dancing that is simply joyful.

bhajo bhajo bhāi, caitanya nitāi / sudṛḍha biśwāsa kori
viṣaya chāḍiyā, se rase majiyā, / mukhe bolo hari hari

My dear brother, I request that you just worship Lord Caitanya and Nityananda with firm conviction and faith. If one wants to be Krsna conscious by this process, one has to give up his engagement in sense gratification. One simply has to chant, "Hare Krsna! Hari Hari!" without any motive.

dekho ore bhāi, tri-bhuvane nāi, / emona doyāla dātā
paśu pākhī jhure, pāṣāṇa vidare, / śuni' jāńra guṇa-gāthā

My dear brother, just try and examine this. Within the three worlds there is no one like Lord Caitanya or Lord Nityananda. Their merciful qualities are so great that upon hearing Them even birds and beasts cry and stones melt.

saḿsāre majiyā, rohili poriyā, /  se pade nahilo āśa
āpana karama, bhuñjāye śamana, / kahoye locana-dāsa

But Locana dasa regrets that I am entrapped by sense gratification. Since I have no attraction for the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda, then Yamaraja, the superintendent of death, is punishing me by not allowing me to be attracted by this movement.
